Days after surpassing the Hindi version of Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan, Stree 2 has now entered the unprecedented ₹600 crore club at the Indian box office.

“Wo Stree hai, wo kuchh bhi kar sakti hai,” has proven to be true at the box office too. Amar Kaushik’s horror comedy, starring Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor, has now become the only Hindi film to cross ₹600 crore at the domestic box office. Stree 2 crosses ₹600 crore

Film trade analyst Taran Adarsh posted on X on Monday morning, “IT’S 600 PAAR… #Stree2 creates HISTORY as the *first #Hindi film* to achieve this milestone… From metros to non-metros, multiplexes to single screens and urban centres to mass markets, #Stree2 is an OUTRIGHT WINNER across the board. It would be premature to predict the *lifetime biz*, as #Stree2 has consistently surprised with phenomenal numbers day after day, week after week.”

He also provided the week-vise break-up of Stree 2 at the domestic box office ever since its release on August 14.

Stree 2 achieves this milestone days after crossing the lifetime business of the Hindi versions of Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan and Pathaan, Ranbir Kapoor-starrer Animal, and Prabhas-starrer Baahubali 2: The Conclusion.

Shraddha celebrates with friends

To celebrate this milestone, Shraddha went out with her girlfriends on Sunday evening. They all wore matching red outfits. Shraddha was seen flaunting golden bracelets, taking a selfie in her car, and celebrating with red balloons. She also joined her friends in cutting a cake, which had “Record breaking Stree” written on it.

Stree 2 also stars Pankaj Tripathi, Aparshakti Khurana, Abhishek Banerjee, and Tamannaah Bhatia. It’s produced by Dinesh Vijan’s Maddock Films, and written by Niren Bhatt.

No, What ticked me off in Stree 2 was that it never brought a satisfactory resolution to the problem it proposed. It seemed to imply many half-assed metaphors, then abruptly abandoned them, as if women no longer mattered to the story. What is the film trying to say? Is it a stab at incel culture, where if you head off one troll, two more will pop up in its place like a Hydra monster? Is it taunting men for standing by while women are being violated thus? Is it empowering women, but telling us that without men to help us, we can’t defeat this evil? Is Vicky the Chosen One because he is the perfect balance of masculine and feminine values?

What does “love in your eyes and heart” even mean?

All of these make for interesting ideas worth exploring, but the film sort of forgets about them in the middle. Or maybe it’s afraid to commit to them, like an actress who avoids making a blatantly feminist statement because she’ll antagonise the male fan base and her mass popularity will take a hit. What other

reason does a film called Stree 2 have to do such a botched job of its underlying spirit?

Shraddha Kapoor is barely there in this film that’s named after her character. Her character’s behaviour and powers are so harebrained and erratic that they don’t make sense. It’s a spirit-on-spirit war in the climax (that stretches on forever, BTW), and suddenly they have all these powers that make you wonder, “Okay if this was possible, why didn’t you do this before?” Let’s not even get into the supernatural logic of it all, because trust me, as an obsessive genre nerd, I tried to reason it out and my head began spinning.

Can we get a film that is comedic gold for everyone but sticks to its guns and actually does right by women? Not today.

Oh Stree, kal aana.

P.S.: Stay for as long as you can after the film ends, because there are two songs and a mid-credits scene squeezed in between. And even then I am not sure it ends.
